Introduction

When a correction sounds contemptuous, mocking or controlling, people may resist it for reasons that have little to do with the facts themselves. This reaction is known as psychological reactance: a motivational response that occurs when people feel their freedom of judgement, choice or self-direction is being threatened. Rather than evaluating the evidence, they become focused on defending their autonomy. Consider the difference between two responses to the same misconception:

• “That statistic is outdated. Newer data show a different result.”
• “Anyone who still believes that clearly has not done basic research.”

The informational content is similar: the claim is wrong. The social content is radically different. The second version challenges competence and invites a defence of self-image. The recipient may spend more effort rebutting the insult than reconsidering the evidence.

This helps explain a common misunderstanding about misinformation correction. People do not always reject corrections because they are attached to the myth itself. Sometimes they reject the correction because accepting it appears to require accepting humiliation. The Practical Lesson for Correcting Misconceptions
