Introduction
Analogies are among the most effective tools for explaining unfamiliar ideas, but they also create some of the most persistent misconceptions. The problem is rarely the analogy itself. Instead, misconceptions arise when learners assume that every feature of the familiar example transfers directly to the target concept. Research in science education and cognitive psychology consistently shows that analogy-based teaching works best when instructors explicitly identify both the similarities and the limits of the comparison. Mapping Similarities and Differences
One of the most widely cited approaches is the Teaching-With-Analogies (TWA) model developed by Shawn Glynn and colleagues. A central feature of the model is that teachers do not stop after presenting an analogy and identifying shared features. They also explicitly indicate where the analogy breaks down before drawing conclusions. This step is designed to prevent students from importing inappropriate assumptions from the familiar source domain into the target concept. - What aspects of the analogy help explain the concept?
- What aspects of the analogy should not be taken literally?

Using Multiple Analogies
A major limitation of single analogies is that every comparison highlights some features while concealing others. When several analogies are presented together, students can see that each captures a different aspect of the target concept. No single analogy becomes the definitive explanation.
Consider the teaching of atoms:
- A solar-system analogy may illustrate relative organisation.

Comparing Analogies Against One Another
An especially effective technique is to place two analogies side by side and ask students:
- Which features are captured by both?
- Which features appear in only one analogy?
- Which aspects of the target concept are still missing?
